Biomass

Biomass power uses rice husk, mustard husk and other agricultural byproducts to create electricity. Biomass plants employ the well-developed boiler and turbine generation method of traditional power plants but use carbon neutral fuel sources.

Biomass is a base load power source, providing consistent power day and night regardless of weather conditions and making it a strong complement to other renewable energy modalities. As biomass generation has scaled across the world, technologies have improved to allow for processing of multiple biomass fuels in one facility, further strengthening production reliability.

Benefits of Biomass

  • Produces consistent power day and night as a baseload renewable energy source
  • Provides sustainable, carbon neutral electricity to agricultural regions
  • Utilizes waste that can create land use problems
  • Creates significant, long-term local employment
  • Provides new sources of income for local farmers selling biomass fuel

Technology Partner

arevaTo execute its biomass portfolio, Astonfield has partnered with Areva, a world leader in low carbon power generation. In addition to its leadership position in nuclear power, Areva has installed nearly 3,000MW of biomass capacity world-wide including a proven track record in the Indian market. Astonfield and Areva have formed a 100MW biomass partnership in which Areva will provide engineering, procurement and construction services (EPC) in addition to taking a 40% equity stake in each project.
